Product information checks

Why AI cites Amazon instead of your DTC page

Your product ranks on Google. Shoppers still ask ChatGPT or Perplexity what to buy — and the answer names the Amazon listing. That is usually not because Amazon bought the answer. Assistants describe products they can describe safely, and the listing often makes that easier than your own page does.

Ranking on Google and being named in an answer are two different things

Classic SEO works on a list of links. AI assistants often answer with a short list of named products and reasons. To describe a product accurately, an assistant has to find who it is for, what it costs, how it compares, and what supports its claims. The industry calls the surrounding work Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) or Generative Engine Optimization (GEO); Hasmord works on the product information underneath it.

How each assistant chooses products is its own decision, and none of them publish it. Results vary by assistant and search mode, so treat a single answer as one observation rather than a verdict.

What an assistant needs from a product page

Three questions decide whether a page can be described and compared:

  1. Is the product clearly described? Specifications, use cases and limits — complete, and hard to misread.
  2. Are the claims backed by evidence? “Suitable for outdoor use” raises real follow-ups: in rain? under which test? for this model?
  3. When something is off, can you fix it and check it? Gaps become specific improvements a person reviews, and the page can be checked again afterwards.

If those answers live mainly on the marketplace listing, and your own page has adjectives where the facts should be, the assistant has more to quote from the listing.

Why the listing is often easier to cite

This is a mechanism, not a measured rate. We are not claiming that any particular share of AI answers cites Amazon. Your own case depends on the category, the assistant, and how complete your page already is.

What an answer needsOn many Amazon listingsOn many brand product pages
Brand and model identityHard to miss, near the top as text.Often buried below lifestyle copy.
SpecificationsDense spec tables and bullet facts.Locked inside images, or missing.
Detail worth quotingReviews and Q&A add specifics.Strong claims with no linked source.
VariantsSize and option structure is explicit.“Best for / not ideal for” never stated.

An assistant that has to answer carefully leans toward the page where brand, model, specifications and caveats are easiest to extract. You do not need to leave Amazon. You need your own page to answer the same questions the listing already answers — and to agree with it.

What to put on your own product page

  1. Brand, model and canonical URL early, as text rather than only inside an image.
  2. A real specification table covering the attributes buyers compare in your category: fit, materials, compatibility, dimensions, test results.
  3. One line of “best for / not ideal for” near the top.
  4. Warranty, returns and support that are easy to find from the product page.
  5. Sources for strong claims — reachable, specific to this model, dated where possible. See evidence checks.
  6. Current price, stock and dated facts, consistent across your site, your feed and your listings.

Hasmord's audit organises these into six dimensions — Structure, Query coverage, Explainability, Comparison, Trust signals, and Freshness and availability. They are Hasmord's own framework for reviewing product information, not the ranking factors of any assistant. The product data checklist walks through the same ground one product at a time.

How Hasmord checks and prioritises the gaps

  1. Add a product. Paste a public product URL, or import a CSV. The free check on the homepage takes one URL with no signup, once a day — the same six-dimension check as the app.
  2. Read the report. Missing, conflicting and unconfirmed facts, prioritised for your category. Hasmord currently supports 41 categories.
  3. Review the evidence. Claims are brought together with their sources and matched automatically; a person confirms the status.
  4. Approve improvements. Nothing is published until someone on your team approves it, and approved changes can be rolled back.
  5. Check the answers. Realistic buyer questions go to the OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Perplexity APIs, and the answer text is saved with its model and date.
  6. On paid plans, publish a page written for AI answer engines, and connect Google Analytics to see visits referred by AI assistants.

Frequently asked questions

Why does ChatGPT or Perplexity mention Amazon when my brand site ranks first on Google?

Ranking wins a place in a list of links. An assistant answering directly needs product facts it can quote and caveats it can state. If the Amazon listing carries brand, model, specifications and proof more densely than your own page, it can be the easier thing to cite — even when your site ranks. That is a mechanism, not a universal rule, and no assistant publishes how it chooses.

What should the first part of a product page say?

Brand and model as text, one line on what the product is, who it is best for and who it is not for, and a pointer to the specification table. Identity that only exists inside an image cannot be read.

Is this the same as classic SEO?

Related, not the same. SEO works on crawling and rankings. This page is about whether the product information is clear enough to be described and compared inside an answer. Hasmord is not a rank tracker.

Can Hasmord make an AI assistant recommend my product?

No. Hasmord checks and improves your product information, and can record whether your brand and model appear in an answer's text. It does not control how any model chooses products, and results vary by model and search mode.

What is the difference between a citation check and a recommendation?

A citation check asks whether the answer text contains your brand and model, or a link to your page. A recommendation is the assistant's own choice to name your product as what to buy. Hasmord reports the first and does not claim the second.

Do I need to leave Amazon?

No. Keep selling where you sell. The work is making your own page answer the same questions the marketplace listing already answers, and keeping the facts consistent between them.

Is there a free way to check one product page?

Yes. The free check on the Hasmord homepage reviews one public product URL, with no signup, once a day. It is the same six-dimension check you get inside the app.
