ChatGPT shopping: a product data checklist for merchants

ChatGPT can show product results with images, prices and merchant links. This guide explains how product data reaches those results, what OpenAI says about how products are selected, and what to check when a product does not appear.

Platform facts on this page were checked against OpenAI's and Shopify's documentation on September 14, 2026. These features change often, so confirm current details in the linked documentation.

Two different ways to show up in ChatGPT

The two overlap but are not the same: a page can be cited without appearing as a product result, and the reverse.

How product data reaches ChatGPT

RouteWho it applies toWhat to do
Shopify CatalogShopify merchantsOpenAI says Shopify product data is already integrated. Keep products Catalog-eligible and manage the ChatGPT channel in Shopify. See AEO for Shopify.
EtsyEtsy sellersOpenAI's merchant page says Etsy catalogs are already integrated, with no application required.
Direct product feedOther merchantsApply on OpenAI's merchant page. Feeds use the Agentic Commerce Protocol; applicants join a waitlist, and OpenAI says a self-serve merchant platform is planned.
Third-party providersMerchants using supported commerce systemsOpenAI names providers such as Salesforce and Stripe as ways to share feeds.
Crawled pagesAny public websiteAllow OpenAI's search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, and keep product facts readable as text.

What OpenAI says about selection

OpenAI does not publish why a specific product was or was not shown for a specific question.

Product feed basics

OpenAI's product feed specification asks for one row per purchasable item or variant. Required fields include an item ID, title, description, URL, brand, seller name, image URL, availability and price. Recommended fields cover variants, category, material, color, size, dimensions, weight, shipping, returns and reviews. OpenAI's documentation asks for the full feed to be refreshed at least daily and updated when sales start or end.

Product data checklist

  1. Identity. Brand, model and variant IDs match between your product page, your feed or Catalog data, and marketplace listings.
  2. Required fields. Title, description, images, price and availability are complete for every variant.
  3. Attributes buyers filter on. Size, material, capacity, compatibility and similar facts are present as structured fields and in the page text.
  4. Claims with evidence. Performance and suitability claims link to a source that applies to the product. See evidence checks.
  5. Consistency and freshness. Price, availability, shipping and return details agree everywhere and are updated promptly.
  6. Crawl access. robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot, your CDN does not block OpenAI's published crawler IP ranges, and product facts are server-rendered text.

If your product is not showing up

  1. Check availability. Shopping results are live for US users, so test from the US market your product sells to.
  2. Check the route. Confirm the product is Catalog-eligible and the channel is on (Shopify), your Etsy listing is active, or your feed application was approved.
  3. Check crawl access. Make sure robots.txt and your CDN allow OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI says robots.txt changes can take about 24 hours to apply.
  4. Check the product data. Run through the checklist above and fix missing or conflicting fields first.
  5. Test several realistic questions over time. Record the date, question and answer. One missing result for one question does not mean the product is ineligible.
  6. Keep unknowns as unknowns. If everything checks out and the product still does not appear, the reason is not published. Keep improving product information and keep observing.

Where Hasmord helps

Hasmord checks the product information on your pages, connects claims to sources, and records how AI models answer realistic buyer questions. It does not submit feeds to OpenAI or control eligibility for ChatGPT shopping. Start with a product data audit.

Frequently asked questions

What is ChatGPT shopping?

When a question suggests shopping intent, ChatGPT can show product options with images, product details and links to merchants. Shopping results are currently live for ChatGPT users in the US.

How does ChatGPT choose which products to show?

OpenAI says product results are selected independently by ChatGPT and are not ads. It considers the shopper's query and context and structured product metadata such as price and description. OpenAI does not publish per-product reasons.

Do I need to apply to appear in ChatGPT shopping?

OpenAI says Shopify and Etsy catalogs are already integrated. Other merchants can apply on OpenAI's merchant page to share a direct product feed.

Can I pay to appear in product results?

OpenAI says product results are not ads and that ads are shown separately.

Is appearing as a product result the same as being cited?

No. Citations are sources ChatGPT links when it searches the web. Product results use structured product data. A page can appear in one without the other.
