AI answers
What counts as a brand mention in AI answers, how steady mentions are in ChatGPT according to our own runs, and how to track them so one answer doesn’t mislead you.

The short answer: AI brand mentions are your brand named in answers from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity or Google’s AI Overviews. A mention isn’t a citation or a recommendation. In our tests, mentions were steadier than sources but still moved: 46% of the brands ChatGPT named appeared in all three runs of the same question on one day, against 15% of the sites it cited. Track them by asking a fixed set of buyer questions several times and reporting the share of answers that name you.

An AI brand mention is your company, product or service named inside an answer from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity or Google’s AI Overviews. It can appear in the text, in a list or as a product card, with or without a link.
We asked ChatGPT the same 60 buyer questions three times on October 22, 2026, an hour apart, and recorded the brands each answer named. We grouped product names under their brand (AirPods under Apple, for example) and removed generic phrases. In 24 questions every run named at least one brand. For those, we compared the brands with the sites the same answers cited:
| ChatGPT, three runs on one day | Brands named | Sites cited |
|---|---|---|
| Appeared in all three runs | 46% | 15% |
| Average overlap between two runs | 66% | 32% |
US, English, ChatGPT search results collected from chatgpt.com, and one person grouping the names, so treat the exact figures as a guide. The site figures come from the repeat-run study.
| What to record per answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Named or not, and in which run | The mention rate across runs |
| Listed, or recommended for a condition | A pick moves buyers; a list entry may not |
| What the answer says about you | Price, specs, stock and claims to check against your own page |
| Other brands named | Your real competitors for that question |
| Sources cited | Where the mention comes from, and where to fix information |
Ordinary brand monitoring tracks what people publish about you: articles, reviews, social posts and forum threads. Tracking AI brand mentions records what an assistant says when a buyer asks. The two are linked: the review sites, articles and threads an assistant reads shape what it says. If AI answers name a competitor and not you, read the sources they cite. Those are the places where your brand is missing or described in less detail.

Hasmord is the AEO-native sales platform. Buyers ask questions across AI assistants, search, and sales conversations. Hasmord uncovers where your answers about your products and services fall short, turns evidence into better answers, finds potential customers for you, and connects every lead to your sales process.
In Hasmord, tracking brand mentions is part of the first of four steps, which uncovers where your answers about your products and services fall short. AI answers asks ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity your buyers’ questions and keeps every answer, including the brands named and recommended and the facts given, and Citations shows the sources behind each one.
It then turns evidence into better answers your team approves. Find customers finds potential customers already looking for what you sell, with the reason each one fits; only the people you verify join your CRM, and Hasmord never contacts anyone for you. In the CRM, each lead keeps the question that brought it, so the questions buyers really ask become the next ones to track. See pricing.
AI brand mentions are your company, product or service named in an answer from an AI assistant such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity, or in Google’s AI Overviews, with or without a link to your site.
Fix a set of buyer questions, ask each one at least three times with web search on, and record whether your brand is named, whether it is recommended, what the answer says about you, the other brands named and the sources cited. Report the share of answers that name you.
Often. When we asked the same questions three times in one day, 46% of the brands ChatGPT named appeared in all three runs, and two runs shared about two-thirds of their brands. That is steadier than the sites it cited, but a single check can still miss you.
A mention names your brand in the answer. A citation links to one of your pages as a source. Either can happen without the other, so track both.
Usually because the pages it read say more about the competitor for that question: reviews, comparisons or clear answers on their own site. Read the sources cited in the answer to see what your competitor has on record that you don’t.
Not directly. They come from many of the same sources as SEO, such as reviews, articles and your own pages, so work that earns coverage and clear pages usually helps both.
